કારના ટાયરથી ફક્ત છ ઇંચ પહોળો કમાનાકાર લોખંડનો એક પાટો જેના બન્ને છેડા જમીનમાં ખૂંપેલા છે, પરંતુ કમાનાકારે વળેલ એ લોખંડનો પાટો મધ્યમાં જમીનથી ખાસ્સો ચાર-પાંચ ફૂટ ઊંચો થઈ જાય છે. એક કાર આવે છે હળવેથી એના ડાબી બાજુનાં ટાયર પેલા પાટા પર ચડે છે જ્યારે જમણી બાજુનાં ટાયર જમીન પર જ રહે છે. કાર આગળ વધે છે અને પાટાની મધ્યમાં આવતા કાર ૪૫ ડિગ્રીના ખૂણે સાવ ત્રાંસી થઈ જાય છે. આવા જ એક બીજા દૃશ્યમાં કારની પહોળાઈના માપે-માપ લોખંડના બે પાટા ધનુષાકાર જમીનથી આઠ-દસ ફૂટ ઊંચા છે જેના છેડા વળાંક લઈ જમીનમાં ખૂંપેલા છે. આ પાટા ઉપર પણ એક કાર ચડી બતાવે છે. કાર બિલકુલ ઉપર પહોંચે ત્યારે એમ લાગે કે હમણાં ગમે તે એક બાજુ કાર ગોથું મારી જશે પરંતુ ગજબનાક બેલેન્સ બતાવી કાર આરામથી બીજા છેડેથી ઊતરી જાય છે.

સરકસના સ્ટંટ જેવાં લાગતાં આ દૃશ્યો કારનું બેલેન્સિંગ ચકાસવાનો ફક્ત એક ભાગ હતો અને કંપની લેન્ડ રોવર સિવાય બીજી કઈ હોય શકે? લેન્ડ રોવર એટલે વિશ્વની સૌથી જૂની બીજા નંબરની ફક્ત ફોર વ્હિલ ડ્રાઈવ કાર (ફોર વ્હિલ ડ્રાઈવ એટલે એવી કાર જેમાં ચારેય પૈડાં એન્જિન સાથે જોડાયેલા હોય) બનાવતી કંપની. ફોર વ્હિલ ડ્રાઈવની તાકાતવર પહેચાન એટલે ‘લેન્ડરોવર’ લેન્ડરોવર એટલે ફક્ત SUV (સ્પોર્ટ્સ યુટિલિટી વ્હિક્લ) બનાવતી કંપની. પોતાની ખડતલ SUV માટે વિશ્વભરમાં બહુ જાણીતી અને ખ્યાતનામ છે આ બ્રિટિશ કંપની.

૧૯૪૮ના સમયમાં ફક્ત રોવર કંપનીના નામે ઓળખાતી કંપનીનો ચીફ ડિઝાઈનર મોરીસ વિક્સ એક વાર રજાઓમાં ફક્ત ફરવા માટે ફોર વ્હિલ ડ્રાઈવ એવી જીપ લઈને નીકળ્યો. પોતાની સફરમાં એ વાહન ચલાવવામાં એને એવી મોજ આવી કે રોવર કંપની માટે એવી જ કાર બનાવવાનું એણે નક્કી કર્યું. અને એક સાંજે રેડ વાર્ક બીચ પર રજાનો આનંદ માણતો એ બેઠો હતો ત્યારે અચાનક એના દિમાગમાં હેડલાઈટ જેવી બત્તી થઈ અને સમંદરની રેત પર એણે એ કારની ડિઝાઈન દોરી જે એને બનાવવી હતી. ત્યારબાદ રોવર કંપની એ ડિઝાઇન પર કામ કરવા મચી પડી અને રેત પર દોરાયેલા કારના મોડલને અંજામ મળ્યો ૩૦ એપ્રિલ ૧૯૪૮માં, જ્યારે આમ્સ્ટેરડ્રામ મોટર શોમાં એનું મોડલ રજૂ થયું અને એને નામ અપાયું - લેન્ડ રોવર. આ કાર રજૂ થતાંની સાથે જ એ વાવાઝોડાની રફતારે લોકપ્રિય થઈ અને એની સફળતાના પગલે કંપનીએ પોતાનું રોવર કંપનીમાંથી ‘લેન્ડ રોવર’ કરી નાંખ્યું. આ SUVની સફળતાથી બીજા જ વર્ષે કંપનીને બ્રિટિશ આર્મી તરફથી આવાં મજબૂત વાહનો બનાવવાના ઓર્ડર મળવા લાગ્યા. ત્યારથી માંડીને આજ સુધી કેટલાય દેશોની ફૌજની પહેલી પસંદ લેન્ડ રોવર જ રહી છે. પછી તે એમ્બ્યુલન્સ હોય કે શસ્ત્રો, મિસાઈલ લઈ જતાં વાહનો. એની મજબૂતાઈ અને બેલેન્સિંગ આખી દુનિયામાં વિશ્વસનીય મનાય છે.

SUVનો પર્યાય બનેલી આ કંપનીએ લેન્ડ રોવર ડિસ્કવરી, ડિફેન્ડર, ફ્રિલેન્ડર, રેન્જ રોવર, રેન્જ રોવર સ્પોર્ટ્સ (રેન્જ રોવર મોડલ પણ એટલું હિટ થયેલું કે હવે બોનેટ પર લેન્ડ રોવરની જગ્યાએ રેન્જ રોવર લખાય છે) નામનાં કેટલાંય શક્તિશાળી મોડલ આપ્યાં જેની વર્ષોવર્ષ સુધારેલી અને નવતર આવૃત્તિઓ બહાર પડતી રહી છે. કાદવ-કીચડના લપસણા હોય કે ઊબડખાબડ રસ્તા, રણની રેતી, ટેકરા, ડુંગરા, ઢોળાવ, નદી, નાળાં, પથરાળ, દુર્ગમ ઊંડા ખાડાઓવાળા ભયંકર રસ્તાઓ પર

Bikes at the 2012 Auto Expo!!!

Motorocycle show: Not only cars, but many bikes were also launched at the 11th Auto Expo 2012. Here are some of the key launches: US cult bike maker Harley Davidson launched two locally-assembled models - FXDB Street Bob and FXDC Super Glide Custom - at a price starting from Rs 9.95 lakh, which is much lower than that of imported motorcycles. FXDB Street Bob and FXDC Super Glide Custom, previously offered as Completely Built-up (CBU) imports, will now be available at all the seven dealership of Harley-Davidson. FXDB Street Bob will be available for Rs 9.95 lakh while FXDC Super Glide Custom will cost Rs 11.5 lakh. Royal Enfield launched a 500cc Thunderbird, which is stated to be the ultimate cruiser for India. The bike looks like a sharpened cleaned up version of the old Thunderbird. The new bike will be on the market by mid 2012. Triumph has showcased a diverse portfolio of seven bikes from four prominent families (Roadster/ Supersports, Adventure / Touring, Modern Classics and Cruisers). The bikes launched by Triumph include the Bonneville, Speed Triple, Street Triple, Tiger 800xc, Storm, Rocket III and Daytona 675. The Bonneville will be the cheapest offering at Rs 5.5 lakh ex-showroom. The commercial sales in India start during the festive season i.e. the third quarter of 2012. Honda Motorcycles unveiled 7 new models including the Dream Yuga and The CBR150R. The CBR150R has light and compact DOHC engine which produces a peak power of 18PS at 10,500rpm and peak torque of 12.6Nm at 7500rpm. The CBR150R will be available in two variants – Standard and Deluxe. he CBR 150R is expected to be priced below Rs 1.2 lakh. Honda also launched a new tri-colour CBR 250R which will be available for sale from February 2012 The key focus for Honda was however the unveiling of their first mass motorcycle in India, the Dream Yuga, which will launch in May 2012. The Dream Yuga is powered by an 110cc engine making 9PS. Honda claims that it will return 72kmpl. Honda also showcased their two superbikes, the VT 1300CX and 2012 CBR1000RR Fireblade. Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) unveiled two new products at the 2012 Auto Expo. The first one is an 110cc mass market commuter called Hayate and the second is a 125cc scooter called Swish. The Swish, which will be selling alongside the Acess, will be priced at Rs 45,431, ex-showroom Delhi and will be available with the dealers by March this year. Suzuki haven't revealed the pricing of the Hayate but said that it will be priced competitively.
